Via Marine Connection:
Beluga whales transported in Russia
Two beluga whales recently captured in Russian waters have been transported almost 10,000km from Vladivostok to Voronezh in a small truck. The journey took approximately 10 days, during which the whales were lying in their own urine and faeces in a small crate. This is inhumane and cruel in the extreme to these mammals, which have already been subjected to the stress of capture and incarceration. Sadly it appears that animal welfare is certainly not at the top of the agenda for their captors - surprising as they stand to make a significant amount of money from these animals, and the stress from the journey could have been fatal.
I seriously have no words. I’m not sure what we can do to help yet, but I’ll keep looking into it.
